EFT Café Extra

On May 10th the EFT Café is holding a daytime workshop at St Oswald’s Hospice split into two parts.

Part 1: Dealing with difficult people

We all have difficult people in our lives. Family, friends, colleagues, clients or customers some people have the knack of pushing our buttons. Fortunately we can use EFT to disconnect those buttons so that we can interact with these people more easily.

From 10am to 12pm we will practice using the Dealing With Difficult People process. This session is open to anyone with some experience of EFT including Beginner’s EFT workshops, EFT for Mental Health Professionals workshops and EFT Level 1 Trainings and above.

Part 2: Tapping swaps

The afternoon session is between 1pm and 4pm. Having completed a Level 2 EFT training many people feel a little bit apprehensive about using these techniques with clients. This workshop is designed to give you an opportunity for people to practice their EFT skills in a supervised sessions and work on an issue that is important to them.

Working with a partner you take turns to work on an issue as a client for an hour then reverse roles to become the therapist to work with their ‘client’ for an hour. There will be a break midway through the afternoon and an opportunity to ask questions.

It’s a great opportunity to clear out some junk and practice your skills. This part of the day is only open to holders of an EFT Level 2 Certificate and those who have attending the EFT for Mental Health Professionals workshop.

Separately each workshop costs £15, attending both costs just £25.

EFT and OCD

My friend Liz Kirsopp replied to a question about using EFT for OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder) on the EFT Cafe email group. It’s an excellent description of how to use EFT with what is thought of as a difficult condition.

The question was:

“Hi was wondering if there was some advice on EFT and OCD - I was
imagining it might be best to work on compulsive behaviour with the
film technique and see if this lowers the compulsion rather than doing EFT in the moment to stop it happening - would this set up a kind of EFT compulsion???”

Liz answered:

It’s a very good question. I had one patient with very severe OCD who was too scared to try EFT in case it did become yet another ritual. Also, just as there is a danger with worriers of trying to attack every single possible worry, there is a danger of trying to tackle every little compulsive behaviour or obsessive thought with OCD which may only lead you further down the plughole of the problem. So I find it useful to look at the purpose of the whole behaviour in general and the beliefs behind it.

I’ve added a few more dates for my introductory EFT stress relief workshops otherwise known as The Weekly Wash.

This is an short, affordable introduction to EFT which will give you enough skill to be able to defuse the unpleasant/stress provoking memories of the last week. Rather than take the week’s stress and anxiety into the weekend you will be able to take care of it and enjoy your time off.

You don’t have to limit yourself to last weeks unpleasantness, once you are able to use this approach you can start to jettison a lot of personal baggage.

The 3 hour workshops are on at St Oswald’s Hospice, Newcastle on:

  • Saturday, September 1st between 10am-1pm
  • Tuesday, September 4th between 6pm-9pm

The first hour of the workshop shows you the basics of EFT, the second two hours gives you supervised practice in using the technique.

The cost for the workshop is just £15. If you have already been to a Weekly Wash workshop or you have an EFT Level 1 or above you can skip the first hour and attend the rest of the training for just £10.

Wouldn’t it be nice if we could use a technique like a magic wand, do a ‘Harry Potter’ on our woes and banish them for good with a simple spell? Unfortunately life isn’t often like that, sometimes is just one thing after another. Even Harry Potter has a long series of adventures and challenges to take care of.

At times EFT can have spectacular results, relieving a deep trauma in less than an hour, or removing a phobia in just a few minutes, such changes can be transforming. More often though, changing your life for the better requires a more sustained effort. When Gulliver was washed up on Lilliput he woke up on the beach finding himself immobilised, not by one huge rope, but by hundreds of thin threads. Even though the Lilliputian ropes where like threads to him, in combination they held him fast.

Many of our difficulties are like this, interwoven threads that bind us, Using EFT we can begin to part those threads, each time giving us a bit more room to manoeuvre. For this slow and steady work EFT is much more like gardening than a magic wand.

The purpose of the EFT Cafe is to do inner gardening in good company. Whether it’s pruning the roses or shovelling the sh… (ahem) .. manure. It’s a good place to meet up with fellow inner gardeners, swap stories and techniques and become happier and more contented. As a free bonus, if you are happier and contented the chances are the people around you will be too.

The first version of this article first appeared at Practical Wellbeing, go there for many other EFT and related articles.

  1. Use it, or loose it: If you have been on a training, or seen an EFT practitioner, you know that EFT can get you surprising results. But EFT is much more like exercise program than a magic wand, you need to put in the effort to get the results.
  2. Enjoy the company of like minded people: EFT is pretty weird, all the strange things you have to say, and the even stranger tapping. If your friends or family know nothing about EFT or think you are a little strange for wanting to do such a thing, it’s nice to meet people who know what you are talking about and think it’s a worthwhile thing to do.
  3. A little bit of encouragment goes a long way: It’s much easier to practice in company. How many exercise bikes sit unused in the corners of bedrooms and garages? It can take quite a lot of willpower to pursue an EFT ‘exercise’ program on your own. When you are with other people it’s much easier to put in the effort and get results.
  4. Help is on hand: When you are around other people who are familiar with EFT and have more experience than you do then you have a reservoir of experience and advice to help you with whatever difficulty you are working on. In general EFTers are usually keen to help and very willing to offer suggestions and support as you find your own way in this effort.
  5. It’s cheaper than therapy: While an EFT practice group is not a substitute for therapy, it is an opportunity to clear up old memories and present anxieties. Disappointments, phobias, anxieties, physical issues can all be tackled in a practice group session. Because EFT has no known side effects you can work on these issues and get some, or total, relief without having to visit a professional.
  6. You have the chance to help someone else whilst helping yourself: Since EFT is egalitarian, you have the chance to help someone else resolve some of their difficulties. In most cases you don’t have to stand by and wait for the experts. Whatever your level of skill you can help someone else make progress.
  7. When what you need is more practice not more training: Perhaps a Level 1 training is more than enough and you don’t want to go on to a Level 2, but the Level 1 course is only 1 day long and some things need more practice than that. Being in a practice group helps you get good at the things that interest you without having to invest in another training.
  8. A practice group can be a very good way to look after yourself: Many people have very stressful jobs with little formal support, or stressful lives where they have to cope with a lot of emotional pressures. EFT gives you a way of reducing those strains, and EFT practice group is a good place to get some relief from stress.
  9. EFT is good for you. It’s relaxing and calming, you’ll feel a lot better when you finish than when you start. It’s a massage for the emotions, so why not take some time to pamper yourself.
  10. It’s a great way to establish your credentials: If you are a Level 2 Practitioner this is a great way to become more widely known. It doesn’t mean spending the session doing a hard sell, it means demonstrating your skill, compassion and trustworthiness. If people like what they see they’ll let you know.

Ask a local EFT Practitioner or Trainer if there is a practice group near you. If there isn’t, start one! You only need a few friends who know about EFT. Meet informally, only work on stuff you feel confident about and start reaping the benefits.
